Afterwards, we enjoy our lunch with a variety of delicious local products at the oldest café and grocery shop in Greece, build since 1840.

Highlights:

  • River trek at the spectacular waterfalls of Housia gorge
  • Visit the cliff hanging monastery of Kipina
  • Visit the Kalarites folk art museum
  • Enjoy lunch at the oldest café and grocery shop in Greece, dating since 1840.

Words of interest

Kipina monastery: The monastery of Kipina, just outside the village of Kalarrites, seems to be a part of the rock inside which it is built. It was constructed in 1212 in the honor of the Assumption of Virgin Mary and its name probably originates from the gardens that were cultivated by the monks beneath it. A short path leads to the wooden bridge above the 4-meter high cliff that will take you inside the monastery. The construction of the monastery is impressive as every part of the rock has been taken advantage of, while at the same time it gives off a sense of hospitality and serenity. Nowadays, there are no monks in the monastery and in order to visit it, you will have to take the key from the coffee house in Kipina village. (source: wondergreece)

Words of interest

Amvrakikos: The entrance of the gulf is through a 700m wide channel, between Aktio (ancient Actium) on the south and Preveza on the north. A recent road tunnel connects the two. The gulf is quite shallow and it’s shore is broken by numerous marshes, large part of which form an estuary system. The Louros and Arachthos rivers drain into it ; for this reason is warmer and less salty than the Ionian sea and a current flows from the gulf into the sea which is reach in grey mullet, sole and eel.

The Amvracian gulf was the site of the “Battle of Actium”, in which Augustus forces defeated those of Mark Antony and Kleopatra (Sept 2, 31BC). From Greek independence until the second Balkan war , the gulf formed part of the border between the kingdom of Greece and the Ottoman empire.

The remains of numerous ancient cities lie lie on it’s shores: Actium (Aktio) at the entrance, where the famous “battle of Actium” was fought in 31BC, Nikopolis, Argos Ippatum, Limnaea, and Olpae.(Source: Wikipedia)

Koprena lighthouse: The Koprena lighthouse was constructed in 1893, with a tower of 9m height and focal plane of 12. Located at Koprena village of Arta, a port with major trade activity since Byzantine era until the very first of 20th century.

The lighthouses building nowadays operates as a museum, inaugurated in October 2000 and it’s housed in the beacon keeper home beside the stone tower. Tools, old lighthouses equipment, operating machines of the lighthouse and its utility in navigation, information of the lighthouse keeper life, elements of the regional history are some of the exhibits of the museum.
